AGRIVOLTAICS
AGRIVOLTAICS
AGRIVOLTAICS IS A TECHNOLOGY THAT ALLOWS LAND TO BE USED SIMULTANEOUSLY FOR FARMING AND GENERATING ELECTRICITY WITH PHOTOVOLTAICS BENEFITS FOR AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT
- Can protect your crops against hail, frost, sunburn, drought or high temperatures.
- Keep the ground moist(er) and protect crops from direct sunlight, resulting in a cooler and more productive environment for plant growth.
- Create moderate temperatures which extend the growing season.
- Improve taste: some vegetables are sweeter and crunchier.
- Are positively affected by the water that is being transferred from the crops to the environment, as it creates cooler conditions for the panels.
- Increase global land productivity.

Agrivoltaic systems | use | Examples |
---|---|---|
Category I & II | Permanent and perennial crops | Fruits, berries, viticulture, hops |
Overhead PV with vertical clearance > 2.1 m Interspace PV with vertical clearance < 2.1 m |
Single-year and long-terms crops | Arable crops, vegetables, alternating grassland, fodder |
Farming under the agrivoltaic system Farming between the rows of agrivoltaic systems |
Permanent grassland with mowing | Intensive and extensive commercial grassland |
(Image A/B/C) | Permanent grassland with pasture | Permanent pasture, pasture rotation (e.g., cattle, poultry, sheep, pigs and goats) |
CAPITAL EXPENDITURE
The costs of agrivoltaics are highly individually variable and depend on factors such as installed capacity, agricultural activity, position and the PV module technology used.
